Sciatica mostly affects one side of the body.

Causes of Sciatica
Sciatica is caused due to excess pressure on the sciatic nerve by the surrounding tissues. The nerve might be affected inside or outside the spinal canal as it extends to the foot. The pain also extends from the spine to foot.
It is caused due to degenerative disc, spinal injury, obesity pregnancy or trauma etc. Some other causes include:
- A Herniated Or Slipped Disc: It is the most common cause of sciatic pain which causes pressure on the sciatic nerve. It is caused when a disc in your is relocated or damaged.
- Piriformis Syndrome: Piriformis muscle lies deep in the buttocks. When this small muscle becomes tight and spasms it leads to putting the pressure on the sciatic nerve and irritating the sciatic nerve which ultimately causes sciatica.
- Spondylolisthesis: It occurs when vertebra(bone) slips forward on to the vertebra beneath it. It narrows the opening through where the sciatic nerve exits.
- Spinal Stenosis: It narrows the spinal canal which puts pressure on the Sciatic nerve and finally leads to sciatic pain.
- Degenerative Disk: This is the condition where intervertebral disc starts degenerating with increasing age or due to some pathology. It is a change in the shape and function of the disc. It finally results in a bulging disc or a herniated disc where the pain starts travelling down to the leg.

Ayurveda is specialized and has the highest success rate ever in treating sciatica. It provides unique Panchakarma Therapies to treat sciatica. Ayurveda provides internal medicines made from herbs to people who are suffering from sciatica problem.
In Ayurveda, it is categorized that sciatica is caused due to Vitiation(corrupt) of Vata which is one of the principle doshas responsible for movement and functionalities of the body and vitiation of Kapha which is responsible for lubrication and body fluids. Sometimes even vitiation of Vata with Kapha(Vata-Kapha) also causes sciatica problem.
At Sushrutha Ayurveda Hospital we believe that Ayurveda treatments restore body functions in an equilibrium state which helps in curing sciatica. So Ayurveda treatments focus on bringing back the Vata and Kapha doshas into an equilibrium state.
We follow the panchakarma therapies like Vasthi, Kati Vasti and Meru Chikitsa to treat sciatica.
Vasti: Vasti is one of the important panchakarma treatment in Ayurveda for curing sciatica permanently. There are many types of Vasti like Kashaya vasti, Uttaravasti, Snehavasti, Siro vasti etc. are known as the main Vastis. This treatment is done under the guidance of Ayurveda doctor. Vasti eliminates all kinds of Vata doshas. It removes toxins from the body. Medicated oils, detections are sent through the anus and vaginal canal. It fixes the dryness, vat and strengthens intestines.
Vasti procedure helps in releasing the spasms and nerve compressions in the affected area. It strengthens and nourishes the entire spine & supporting tissues. The treatment period varies 4 – 5 weeks considering the severity of the disease.
Kati Vasti: In Ayurveda, Kati Vasti is a famous Ayurvedic procedure which helps in curing lower back pain. This procedure also helps in curing fractures, dislocation, degeneration and tumours.
The waist area is called as Kati and holding the warm ayurvedic oils on particular areas for some time is called Vasti. In this procedure, the patient is made to lie forward on his chest. By using flour, a small four-sided leak-proof enclosure is made and placed on his waist. A customised ayurvedic oil with a lukewarm temperature is poured into the enclosure. The temperature of the oil is maintained by changing and reheating for every 5 minutes continuously. This continues for almost half an hour. If this part of the treatment is done for the day, the area is gently massaged. The course is continued for 5 to 7 days as suggested by Ayurveda doctor.
Meru Chikitsa: Meru Chikitsa is an ancient Ayurveda procedure developed thousands of years ago. As age increases dryness in the discs also increases which result in the reduction of shock absorbing quality of the discs. Meru Chikitsa- ‘Meru‘ means ‘spine’ and ‘Chikitsa‘ means ‘treatment’, it deals with the problems related to the spine and its structures. The vital energy forces Vata, Pitta and Kapha are restored and balanced in the body by Meru Chikitsa treatment which is responsible for maintaining the harmony and proper function of body, mind and soul.
Along with these therapies, Sira Vedana (Venesection) and Agni karma (Heat therapy) are also very important procedures for treating Sciatica.
